The Bellas are Incomparable

“You can look but you can’t touch…” When this music drops, we are used to the most popular twins making their way down the ramp and to the ring. One dressed in a tank, tights and a flannel shirt wrapped around her waist. The other with a t shirt, trunks, snapback and Nikes. The twirl. The flag, the twin magic. We have seen The Bella Twins electrify the crowd with their in-ring moves, backstage drama and two reality shows. Now you can hold a piece of The Belles in your hand with their New York Times Best Selling Book Incomparable.

In this transparent and raw co-memoir, we read about the life and journey of Brie and Nicole Garcia Colace; more famously known as the Bella twins. From their tumultuous childhood being raised as identical twins to their rise to fame in the developmental FCW to their busy lives as successful businesswomen. They are the epitome of strong, outspoken, successful women in a world that is male driven and dominated. In Incomparable we see twins raised as interchangeable beings, desperately trying to find their own identity from one another but also trying to build a strong unit together.

Going back and forth, Brie and Nikki tell their story in their words and through their eyes, with chapters synonymous to their wrestling career. Born and raised in California, the half Mexican, half Italian duo, began their life in an unstable condition. It is revealed that their mother didn’t even realize she was pregnant with twins until they came a month early. Although their beginning was not ideal, they always spoke of a solid support system from their hard-working maternal grandparents. From there, the Bellas speak of an unstable home, substance abuse and the heartache of growing up in a broken home when their parents separated. Nikki and Brie never let it detour them in living their life on their terms. This adversity is what made them the strong, self-made women they are today.

Later on in the book, we also get the gritty details of all the backstage dirt, fans love to speculate about. Whether it was how they fought for time in matches and story lines to the catty girl fights amongst the woman crawling and scratching to get their spotlight. Their fight to be seen as equal in a male dominated industry is etched out before us and could be interpreted as the inspiration for the Women’s Evolution in wrestling today. Although their dreams were cut short due to injury, the path was laid.

I believe everyone from wrestling fans to the casual reality TV watcher will enjoy this book. You can’t judge someone until you know their story. It was devastating to read about Brie losing the love of her life and that Nikki, like many today, has a #MeToo Story. I couldn’t help but tear up at some of their stories, but also bask in the happiness of their success.  I’m super proud of Nikki and Brie for the success they have now. I think they have both grown as people and continue to be an inspiration to their fans.
